OWASSO KNOCKS OFF SAPULPA IN REGIONAL OPENER

Sapulpa used four pitchers in the fifth inning and donated six RBI walks to contribute to Owasso's runaway 18-5 victory in Wednesday's opener of the Class 6A regional baseball tournament. While the game dragged on 2 1/2 hours, Broken Arrow and Sand Springs' teams watched eagerly as they waited to play their first-round game. Sapulpa kept things close through four innings, coming back to take a 2-1 lead in the first and holding Owasso to only one run in the third. With two outs and a 1-2 count in his first at bat, Sapulpa's Kyle Alcorn lunged at a low fastball and popped it up high behind the pitcher's mound. Trey Bilby and Max Ryan took off on contact and celebrated their runs after the ball fell to the turf. But Ethan Williams gave up the lead in the fourth inning and exited after walking a pair of batters. He was replaced by Wyatt Sellers, and later five others, as Owasso kept the runs cycling across the infield at Stigall Field. "We just couldn't find the plate," Sapulpa coach Ron Hill said. "They threw strikes and we didn't." Owasso centerfielder Parker Dunn and catcher Jake Enzbrenner accounted for seven RBIs on three hits. Dunn started things by leading off the fifth inning for Owasso. He drew his third of four walks and started an inning that saw 16 Rams come to the plate. "There's nothing wrong with walking four times in a row, it's a discipline thing," Dunn said. Owasso scored 10 runs on four hits and six walks in the grueling fifth. Dunn, not satisfied with four free bases, took two strikes in a sixth-inning at bat before blasting a two-run home run that climbed a fair distance up the foul pole in right field. "I was trying to find a pitch to drive," he said. "I didn't want to pop up and I didn't really want to walk again, I wanted a good at bat." Enzbrenner added a three-run double in the sixth to secure the run-rule. C.D. White closed out the game in relief of Dodger Turner, who picked up the win in four innings. "It's always good to get the first one out of the way," Dunn said. "There's a lot of things we can learn from, but plenty to look forward to."
