FOOTBALL GAME MOVED BACK TO SAND SPRINGS

The alumni game has been moved back to Sand Springs this year. Thanks to a bond issue, the Sapulpa Chieftains are getting a new press box to go along with new turf, but the construction isn’t finished and the Third Annual Highway 97 Alumni Football Game has been moved back to Sand Springs’ Memorial Stadium for the second-straight year. The game pits Sapulpa alumni against Charles Page High School alumni, and the series is currently tied. Sapulpa Touchdown Club President Misty Inks said Sapulpa’s George F. Collins Stadium doesn’t have a PA system yet and the home stands are currently closed off. CPHS head coach Dustin Kinard said the decision was made Tuesday night. On Saturday, July 30, the game will give former football players the chance to relive the glory years and show the fans they still have what it takes to play. Last year, the Sandites had home-field advantage and way better players. CPHS won 35-0, hammering the Chieftains in front of a crowd at Memorial Stadium. The game raised $3,000 and was split between both teams, and now the game is back at Sand Springs. The series is tied 1-1 after Sapulpa won the inaugural game, 20-7, and former Sapulpa quarterback J.R. Romine was in on every score. However, Sand Springs did a little recruiting and got some younger alumni to help the following year. “That was all the players,” said CPHS head coach Dustin Kinard. “They didn’t want to get beat. There’s already talk of doing that again, and I hope they do.” Now, Sandite great Pedro Negron has announced he will play. On Monday, the Sandites will have another sign up and practice starts immediately after. Players need to bring a physical and cleats, if they have them. Kinard said the football program is providing the uniforms and pads, and if someone needs cleats they can probably help them. The CPHS coaching staff will attempt to teach the older players an offense and a defense in five days. “My coaches have fun with it. It’s really laid back,” Kinard said. This year will be even more fun, coaching-wise. Former Sand Springs defensive coordinator Robert Borgstadt is now the head coach at Sapulpa, and the Sand Springs coaches are gunning for him.
