SAPULPA HIRES MEMORIAL'S STEVE IRVINE

Steve Irvine is moving up in class. After spending the past three years as Memorial’s head baseball coach in the 5A ranks, Irvine has been hired for the same job at Sapulpa in 6A. “It’s a bigger school on a bigger stage and a chance to compete against the best baseball programs and coaches that Oklahoma has to offer,” he said. Irvine replaces Ron Hill, who guided the Chieftains for the past two seasons. Hill is stepping down for personal reasons and will assist his wife, Rosemary Holloway-Hill, who is the Chieftains softball coach. “Steve represents the excellence in character, achievement and commitment to students that we expect of our coaches,” Sapulpa athletic director Jason Parker said. “When combined with our wonderful community and strong school staff, coach Irvine will make great things happen for Sapulpa students.” Click Here! Irvine’s Memorial coaching record was 55-50. He was named district coach of the year in 2015 when the Chargers went 25-11 and reached the state tournament, making their first appearance since Irvine played third base for the Chargers in 2004. A 2006 Memorial graduate, Irvine played college baseball for two years at Eastern State College and two more at Division I McNeese State in Lake Charles, Louisiana. A 30th-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Angels, he played 2½ years in their organization and worked as a Chargers assistant in his spare time before being named as head coach. Sapulpa was a frequent 6A contender not long ago, but the Chieftains have struggled recently, going 18-66 over the past three years. “I’m aware of Sapulpa’s history of being competitive year in and year out and that’s something we want to get back to,” Irvine said. Irvine said he was meeting with his Memorial players Monday evening and expected to be introduced to the Chieftains on Wednesday. He and wife, Hannah, have two children
