CPHS BEATS SAPULPA IN ALUMNI GAME

Some of the players looked just like they did in high school. Some didn’t. The Charles Page High School alumni football team beat the Sapulpa Chieftains for the second year in a row thanks to a last-second touchdown from fullback Znick Ferrell. The Sandites won the Third Annual HWY 97 Alumni Football game 20-14 Saturday night at Memorial Stadium, after the game was moved back to town due to the renovation of Sapulpa’s stadium. “It was a good competitive game,” said CPHS head coach Dustin Kinard. “No major injuries as of yet.” With the game tied 14-14 with twenty seconds to play, Ferrell scored on a blast up the middle for the game winner. Sapulpa drew first blood with a 20-yard pass from J.R. Romine to Chachi Ward with 11:08 to play in the first half. Romine added the extra point and the Chieftains led 7-0. Just before halftime, Cody Hale threw an 18-yard pass to Cody Hildebrandt and Ferrell added the two-point conversion for the 8-7 Sand Springs lead at the half. After the touchdown, Hildebrandt said what everyone else was thinking, “I am so tired.” In the third quarter, the Browns went to work. Marc and Michael Brown helped take the Sandites to the 5-yard line, and Davey Thayer then punched the ball in for the 14-7 Sand Springs advantage. Ferrell was stopped by the Chieftain defense on the conversion. Sapulpa’s Jason Broom tied the game in the fourth quarter at the 4:59 mark on a 2-yard plunge, and it looked like the game would go into overtime. Sandite running back, Terrance Dixon drove his team down the field, and Ferrell scored the game winner. Dixon carried the bulk of the load all game, but Pedro Negron, Mitchell Brown, Ferrell, and Ryan Umbarger had some big runs too. The game officially ended when safety Ryan Freeman intercepted Romine at around midfield. Both defense flexed its muscles throughout the game and Sapulpa’s Paul Littlebear picked off Hale early in the game. Hale fumbled early, but the Sandites recovered. "I had a blast playing on that field against Sapulpa," Negron said. "It was an awesome game and both teams showed up to play. We had great fans and a great environment for a great cause. I loved it." Romine, who graduated from Sapulpa in the late 1990s, was glad the game was competitive this year and said his legs still have some life in them. “[Sapulpa] definitely had a better showing this year. I'm getting older, and the competition seems to be getting younger. I've still got a few good years in me. Hopefully we can continue to recruit some of the younger guys too,” he said. The series is now 2-1 in Sand Springs’ favor, and this year, the stakes were even higher. Former CPHS defensive coach Robert Borgstadt is now the Sapulpa head coach, and Kinard and Borgstadt could be heard trashing talking across the field, but it was all in good fun.
