SAPULPA OPEN REGIONAL PLAY WEDNESDAY

If it were part of the World Cup soccer tournament, it might be called the “group of death.” Owasso, Broken Arrow and Sand Springs combined for 68 high school baseball wins this season, but only one of them can reach the Class 5A state tournament. All three are grouped, along with Sapulpa, in the regional tournament that opens Wednesday at Owasso’s Stigall Field. Owasso, the defending state champ, went 26-6 on the way to the District 6A-4 title and is seeking its 14th state title overall, third in four years and 11th since 1998. The Rams are hosting their 20th consecutive regional tournament. Broken Arrow went 21-14 in finishing fourth in District 6A-3, and Sand Springs had the same record as the fifth-place team in 6A-4. “I think it’ll be a good regional, but if you were going to pick one, they are all tough,” Sand Springs coach Bill Hutson said. “You’re going to have to beat a couple of teams that are good.” Owasso plays Sapulpa, eighth seed from District 6A-3, at noon, and Broken Arrow faces Sand Springs in a potential blockbuster first-round matchup at 2:30 p.m. The tournament continues with first-round winners and losers games at 5 and 7:30. Muskogee also opens regional play Wednesday at Edmond Deer Creek, but all other action involving eastern 6A-5A teams is scheduled to begin Thursday.
